Fire Department

The Building Inspection Department is a division of the Fire Department within the City of Hartwell.  Alan Daniel is the Fire Chief / Building Official.

The city is presently changing permitting software and a link to the new system will be placed here when completed.

The Building Official can be reached at 706-856-3209 or by email at:  [email protected]                       The office is in the front of the Fire Department at 488 East Howell Street in Hartwell.                                   The Building Inspection Office number is 706-856-3210                                                                                                 The Inspectors are in the office from 08:00 to 10:00 AM M-F to answer questions and issue permits, after 10am inspectors are out conducting inspections most of the day.

plan review

The department will conduct a plan review on all new residential and commercial construction projects, all major renovations to existing structures and all commercial kitchen hood systems.  The contractor or owner shall provide department will a site plot plan with the structure on it and setbacks, floor plans, elevation plans, foundation plan, roof plan, plumbing, mechanical and electrical details.  The review will take around two weeks and then the permits will be issued to the licensed contractors.

The City of Hartwell will verify if the contractor is licensed by the Georgia Secretary of State Construction Licensing Boards.  Licensed individuals ensure you are getting contractors with the experience and qualifications to complete your project correctly.  These individuals have taken the exams to verify their knowledge and experience.  If they are a licensed Residential and Commercial Builder within the state, the state has their Liability Insurance and Workers Compensation Insurance on file.  You can look up a properly licensed contractor for yourself by going to:  goals.sos.ga.gov  ,  select the profession and enter their name, Search.

Trades Contractors can send an email to us with their company name, Licensed Contractor name and license number, project address, type work or equipment to be installed.   We will complete the permit for you and send you an application to sign and submit back to us.  You will be given ways to make payment for your permit.

The Inspection Department will need the Building Contractor to complete a standard form that advises us of project location and whom they plan to utilize for Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing.  If the project will be on city sewer or if not available, the septic system data from the Environmental Engineering.

Certificate of appropriateness

Homeowners and/or Business owners must complete this form if they are within one of the city's historic districts and they plan to alter or build anything that is visible on the exterior of the property.  The HHPC meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 4 pm in the Courtroom.

business occupancy license

The City of Hartwell requires that business owners obtain an Occupancy License from the city.  Before a license can be issued, an Occupancy Inspection will have to be conducted by this Department to ensure it is zoned properly and meets all fire safety codes.

Subdivision ordinance

Our Subdivision Ordinance, Chapter 32 of the city code of ordinances, requires developers to meet specific requirements before the first home goes vertical.  You can go to any internet search engine and type in Georgia Municipal Codes and select H, you should see Hartwell and select it, the code of ordinances will appear.  The subdivision ordinance is Chapter 32 and our Zoning Code is Chapter 42.
